Last week the annual conference for the British Association for Crystal Growth, held for the first time in the Mid-West at the University of Limerick was organised by the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre, a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded centre hosted at the University of Limerick (UL).

The event, a huge success, chaired by Dr Sarah Hudson, UL and Dr Denise Croker, SSPC General Manager, were delighted to bring such an event to Limerick. The 150 participants, who represented twelve international locations, travelled to see giants in the field of crystal science speak. Delegates felt privileged to be in the audience of such experts such as Joel Bernstein, Nair Rodriguez-Hornedo, Katharina Edkins, Tomislav Friscic, Kieran Hodnett, Tom Leyssens, Joseph Lubach, Ake C. Rasmuson, Anthony Reilly, Gabriele Sadowski and Jan Sefcik.

The BACG annual lecture, on this occasion was given by Prof. Kieran Hodnett, SSPC’s previous Director, who is a member of the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Limerick since 1984.

The programme included keynote lectures, contributed lectures, a PhD student conference, poster sessions sponsored by Crystal Growth and Design and APC, the crystals in art competition and young scientist of the year award.
The event delivered an exciting programme compromising the latest developments in crystal growth, nucleation, crystallisation engineering and characterisation of crystalline materials. Bringing together a diverse community of crystal scientists and engineers that stimulated great ideas and engaging discussions around crystal science through many sessions.
