To celebrate #vote100 this year, the Royal Society of Chemistry have published a special themed collection of articles their journals, showcasing the work of 100 influential women of chemistry. Included in the themed collection celebrating exelleced in research is Prof. Anita Maguire, VP Research at University College Cork and Co-Principal Investigator with SSPC.
Co-Director Prof. Michael Zaworotko recently paid a visit to the new campus at Tianjin University, China, as keynote speaker at the first china-Ireland Joint Symposium on Cocrystals and Crystal Engineering “Crystal Engineering: Then and Now”. Chinese Universities are rising fast in world rankings reflecting the enormous investment made over the year. Although China is number one in scientific productivity and still reaching bigger heights there lies potential to support translational research, high risk research and I.P. development. The relevance of such visits made by SSPC is the strength the Centre and Ireland possess, making the potential of future collaborations.
SSPC Funded Investigator Ger McGlacken, has been successful in an LRAP Grant application. This is a highly competitive funding call from Eli Lilly, which attracts applications from academics from all over the world. This is funded entirely by Eli Lilly in the US and will involve Humphrey Moynihan and Marie Kissane (Lilly, Kinsale) and Scott May (Lilly, US). The project is ‘Stabilized Metal Nanoparticles for Catalysis Applications’ and funds received amounts to $264,958.
The Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Pharmaceutical Research Centre, SSPC, engage yearly in outreach activities share their work with a broader community. Such collaborations provide a systemic way to enhance students' interest in, attitudes toward, and understanding of science while contributing to the professional development of teachers and scientists alike. It also offers opportunity to the Centre’s researchers to share the passion and importance of what they do in their research.
SSPC will once again be well represented at AIChE at the the Annual Meeting 2018 in Pittsburgh with 15 oral presentations this year. SSPC researchers attending and presenting at the conference will host a networking session on Tuesday, October 30th at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, room 338, from 3-5pm to meet with conference attendees and highlight their research in SSPC.

The President’s Excellence Awards for Staff recognise outstanding contributions by staff (academic/research/support) to the overall goals of the University and to the campus community. These awards provide an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and thank staff members for their exceptional commitment and the part they play in the further development of the University of Limerick. Congratulations to SSPC Funded Investigator Dr Pat Frawley on his award for innovation, an award that recognises examples of truly innovative work. An award could be made for innovation in research, or those who have solved problems creatively and proactively with positive results. SSPC Co-Director Prof. Michael Zaworotko and our new Funded Investigator with the Centre, Jakki Cooney on their award for leadership. An award that recognises those who create a vision, who inspire and who work with others to enable them to achieve their potential.
