Chengbin Tang’s SSPC placement at Boston Scientific
September 9, 2025

Chengbin Tang, is a 4th year PhD student at University College Cork, under the supervision of Dr Fatemeh Kavousi and Prof. Abina Crean. Chengbin had an opportunity to do an SSPC industry placement with Boston Scientific Cork, for 3 months. Read about his experience below on how placement the programme helps students understand the industry and provide assistance for their future careers.

Since the placement program is so related to my PhD thesis, I already have a concept of what and how to do this program, a detailed plan is carried out very fast after discussion with my placement supervisor. BSC PD lab is well equipped, where I can do almost all analysis which I need.

I learned many new analysis technologies, which is really helpful for my future PhD research. Besides, the way how to run a project and the methodology how to solve problems. This placement is actually an industry application of my PhD thesis, the good result builds me a huge confidence that proves the value of my PhD work

The colleague there were very friendly and willing to help, huge amounts of opportunities and freedom to try your ideal. The initial interview helped me to understand what I am going to do during the placement and so related to my PhD thesis.

I am very grateful to SSPC for organising this placement program. I learned a lot during my placement in Boston Scientific, which I could not learn during my PhD. In addition to learning relevant analytical techniques that can be applied to PhD projects, how to run a project, turn the initial idea into reality and lead its success is a very challenging but also very meaningful thing.

The sense of accomplishment when you achieve good results will provide you with great confidence in your future research career. In addition, doing a placement in industry is different from campus. How to integrate into a diverse work environment and get along with colleagues from different countries is a very valuable experience. I sincerely hope that this placement programme of SSPC can help more students understand the industry and provide assistance for their future careers.
