The 19th Annual CSCB Symposium on ‘Recent Advances in Synthesis and Chemical Biology” was organised by SSPC Co-Principal Investigator Professor Pat Guiry and held virtually on December 11, 2020.
The Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology, was established in Dublin in 2001 and is a collaboration in the chemical sciences between UCD, TCD and the RCSI. This symposium typically brings together approximately 150 researchers from the partner institutions and abroad. This year, the first time it has been held virtually, there were 480 people registered from across the island of Ireland and from too many countries abroad to list here. There are many attendees from the Irish pharmaceutical industry also.
The programme consisted of five eminent speakers:
- Professor Masayuki Inoue (University of Tokyo, Japan)
- Professor David Procter (University of Manchester, UK)
- Professor Liz Nolan (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
- Professor Walter Leitner (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, Muelheim, Germany)
- and Professor Phil Baran (Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, USA)
In addition to the main programme of lectures there was an hour and 40 minutes dedicated to 10 selected short talks from Early Career Researchers. This replaces the normal poster session and we were delighted to have 4 PhDs and 6 Postdoctoral Fellows (four female and six male) speakers from the CSCB partner institutions of UCD, TCD and RCSI and from University College Cork, the University of Edinburgh, ICIQ in Tarragona, the University of Montpellier, the MPI for Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam and the University of Vienna. Each winner received a prize of €150 and SSPC sponsored 4 of these prizes.
