Md Kamruzzaman’s industry placement at SK Biotek
December 20, 2024

Read about Md Kamruzzaman experience on an SSPC placement at SK Biotek:

I am Md Kamruzzaman, a fourth-year PhD researcher at the Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre (PMBRC) at South East Technological University (SETU), Waterford. One of the major challenges in pharmaceutical development is the poor aqueous solubility of many compounds, which reduces their dissolution and absorption in the body-a research challenge extensively investigated by the SSPC medicine theme. Under the supervision of Niall O’Reilly, Peter McLoughlin, and Helen Cathcart, my research focuses on formulating high drug-loading amorphous drug systems to improve the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, amorphous materials are not very stable on their own, which poses another challenge. My work involves developing formulation strategies to maintain their amorphous state until they reach the patient.

I recently completed a three-month industry placement in the Research and Development at SK Biotek, Swords, Ireland. This experience provided me with a practical understanding of the operational procedures in the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland. It was a valuable experience that provided insights into the pharmaceutical industry’s research and development activities. This opportunity allowed me to enhance my technical skills in crystallization, material characterization, particle engineering, and the implementation of process analytical technology. The placement provided a valuable opportunity to explore work in the industry, particularly within a GMP facility. My activities were based in processes R&D, which is part of the Research and Development department. It was a great learning experience to observe these professionals and understand the process and instruments they used to synthesis of drug substance and intermediates.

Beyond the technical knowledge, the  placement also emphasized the significance of soft skills, such as team work, time management, communication and professional conduct.  These skills are essential for success, whether in academia or industry, and the placement gave me the chance to further refine them.

This placement was an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in the pharmaceutical industry. It not only helped me understand how my skills fit into a professional career but also allowed me to develop and update skills that will be crucial when transitioning from academia.

Overall, this experience provided me with a solid understanding of the work involved in the pharmaceutical industry, the potential roles for PhD graduates and the expectations they need to meet. It was particularly inspiring to connect with SSPC alumni and hear about their successful transitions from academia to industry. Their stories were full of valuable guidance and insights, which I found incredibly motivating. I am grateful to SSPC for the opportunity and support during my PhD, which has allowed me to take full advantage of career development opportunities and connect with industry professionals.
