At this year’s symposium, SSPC marked a keynote presentation given by Dr Joe Hannon, by acknowledging his outstanding contributions to SSPC as he embarks on his next adventure, a well-earned retirement filled with travel, kayaking, and new experiences!
SSPC has thrived thanks to Joe’s openness, collaborative spirit, and infectious enthusiasm. He has an exceptional ability to bring out the best in people, transforming challenges into opportunities for creativity and innovation. Joe consistently pushes boundaries, inspiring others to think beyond convention, an ethos that lies at the very heart of SSPC. Congratulations to our SSPC Industry Champion, as we celebrate his remarkable career and the lasting legacy he leaves within SSPC.
Joe Hannon, Director and founder of Scale-up Systems, the team behind Dynochem and Scale-up Suite process modeling software, and now a part of Mettler Toledo. Joe has been an active and valued member of SSPC for over 12 years, sharing his expertise, insight, and trademark good humour with our community.
Joe’s journey began at University College Dublin (UCD), where he graduated as a chemical engineer and completed a final-year project on fluid mixing in reactors. His passion for mixing deepened during his time at BHR Group in the UK, where he also earned his PhD from Cranfield University, focusing on CFD simulation and the prediction of chemical reactions.
Soon after, he started Scale-up Systems as an Irish consulting and software development company focussed on accelerating process development and scale-up for leading pharmaceutical companies worldwide and working across all drug modalities. Joe has worn many hats: from general management and business development, to technology development, customer training and customer support. He is also a Social Media content developer extraordinaire and a legend on LinkedIn!
Joe is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and an active contributor and volunteer there particularly in PD2M (the Pharma forum) a group that love him so much they made temporary tatoos and stickers of his face at the last conference.
He has also served on many industry advisory boards including our own in SSPC, but also PD2M and UCD Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. Joe has participated on the organising committees of many technical conferences.
